Overview

For us Armenians, welcoming guests primarily means feeding them well, and to be honest, all of our sightseeing tours are essentially culinary tours. Armenia is famous for its simple but very delicious dishes, and your experience of visiting the country will be incomplete if you don’t try the main dishes from each region.

But for true gourmets, we have designed a thematic culinary tour of Armenia that will provide a deeper understanding of the traditions and secrets of traditional Armenian cuisine. The program’s concept combines sightseeing visits to major attractions with tasting the dishes and beverages that are typical of each region. Our lunches and dinners will take place only in the most interesting authentic restaurants and village guesthouses, where everything is prepared from local fresh products.

The tour includes several masterclasses during which we will have the opportunity to participate in the preparation of dishes and desserts under the guidance of professional instructors. Since many dishes and activities are seasonal, the program may be slightly modified depending on the time of the tour.

We want to emphasize that in addition to dishes, we have planned tastings of alcoholic beverages, and as you already know, Armenia is famous for its wine and brandy. Furthermore, we will try homemade fruit vodka made from local fruits.

Upon Arrival in Yerevan, after checking in at the hotel, we will promptly embark on an exploration of the city. The itinerary includes a sightseeing tour featuring visits to Victory Park, the Cascade monument, Republic Square, and Northern Avenue. We will also make a stop at Matenadaran, a museum housing ancient manuscripts, including those containing historic Armenian recipes alongside spiritual and scientific texts. Following this, we'll delve into the art of cognac production with a visit to the Ararat brandy factory, complete with a delightful Armenian cognac tasting experience. Later, we'll enjoy an authentic Armenian welcome at Yerevan Tavern, complete with a traditional show program and a chance to savor veal khashlama. As evening falls, we'll take a leisurely walking tour through the enchanting streets of Yerevan, concluding our day's adventures before returning to the hotel.

Departing from Yerevan, our journey takes us to two of Armenia's most popular destinations after the capital: the fully restored pagan temple, Garni, and the rock-cut monastery of Geghard. Along the way, we'll make a memorable stop at the Arch of Charents, offering breathtaking views of Mount Ararat on clear days. Garni is renowned for its abundant fruits and refreshing spring water. During our visit, we'll enjoy a traditional lunch hosted at a local villager's home. Their house boasts a unique feature - a spring with crystal-clear, ice-cold water flowing right beneath it, complete with a fish farm. Here, we'll even have the opportunity to catch our own trout, which will be expertly prepared for our lunch. You'll be delighted by the exceptional taste of this freshly caught fish. To complement our meal, we'll also savor homemade apricot vodka. After our enriching culinary experience, we'll return to Yerevan, filled with the flavors and memories of this remarkable day.

Today, our journey takes us into the picturesque mountains of Armenia. Our first stop is Hovhannavank Monastery, a historic treasure dating back to the 5th century, perched on the cliffs of the Kasakh gorge. We'll also pause to admire the monument dedicated to the Armenian alphabet, a testament to Armenia's rich cultural heritage. Next, we'll ascend to the Amberd fortress, nestled on the slopes of Aragats, Armenia's highest mountain. The medieval Amberd Fortress is a rare survivor among Armenian fortifications, strategically situated in hard-to-reach locations, a testament to the country's military history. If the weather permits, we'll continue our ascent to Lake Kari, offering stunning vistas and easy access to the summit. For lunch, we'll dine at the Amberd tavern, where you'll savor an ancient Armenian delicacy known as "khash." This unique soup is crafted from beef legs and is traditionally enjoyed with vodka, following a canonical ritual. Khash is so beloved in the region that it's considered a national dish in neighboring countries. Yet, its true home and undeniable excellence lie here in Armenia. After our mountain adventure and culinary exploration, we'll make our way back to Yerevan, with memories of a day filled with history, nature, and gastronomic delights.

Today, we embark on an immersive circular tour with overnight stops in captivating regions. Our journey begins with a visit to the Khor Virap monastery, nestled at the base of majestic Mount Ararat. Continuing southward, we venture into the heart of Armenian winemaking excellence, the Areni region. Here, we'll have the pleasure of exploring one of the local wineries, where we'll indulge in wine tastings featuring the renowned indigenous grape variety, Areni. With special permission from archaeologists, we'll ascend to the remarkable Bird Cave, home to the world's oldest winery, dating back 6000 years. Our lunchtime experience awaits at the residence of local winemaker David. Here, we'll savor tanapura, a delicate soup crafted from matsun (local yogurt), and the eagerly anticipated khorovats (kebab), cooked to perfection in a traditional tonir oven—an Armenian culinary masterpiece. Additionally, we'll partake in a captivating master class on crafting lavash, the thin Armenian flatbread celebrated on the UNESCO Intangible Heritage List. Following our delicious lunch, our journey takes us to the enchanting Noravank Monastery, a stunning medieval gem in Armenia. As the day concludes, we'll find rest and dine in the charming village of Hermon, where we'll have the opportunity to relish chicken stewed in a flavorful wine sauce, complemented by a medley of fresh vegetables and aromatic seasonings.

One of the most captivating days awaits us as we journey from the Vayk region to the Tavush region. Along the way, we've arranged another delightful culinary master class, which will be tailored to the season. You can look forward to selecting and extracting honey, crafting Chechil cheese, or creating delectable baklava. Our first destination is Noratus, home to a remarkable collection of medieval khachkars. We'll then continue our exploration with visits to Hayravank and Sevanavank, both located on the tranquil shores of Lake Sevan. From Sevanavank, we'll be treated to a breathtaking panoramic view of Armenia's "blue pearl" - Lake Sevan. Our culinary journey continues with a mouthwatering tasting session at the Tsovatsots coastal restaurant, featuring dishes prepared with the bountiful gifts of Lake Sevan, including whitefish and crayfish kebabs. As the day draws to a close, we'll find relaxation and sustenance at the Casanova Inn in Dilijan. Here, you'll have the opportunity to savor harisa puree soup, an ancient Armenian delicacy made from boiled wheat and poultry meat. This will be a memorable evening and overnight stay in Dilijan.

Here, you'll have the opportunity to actively participate in the preparation of this savory bread. Our lunchtime experience promises a taste of goat or lamb khashlama, accompanied by dishes crafted from locally sourced wild herbs. All roads lead to Yerevan...
Svetlana
So in October 2018 we set off to discover and taste this great country (Gastronomic tour “Tasty Armenia”, 10-16.10.2018). I would immediately like to note the professional work of the Barev Armenia specialists. when drawing up the program for this route. Even when planning the trip, it was clear that there was a balanced combination of excursions and the gastronomic part of the program, which was ultimately confirmed. We saw the main attractions of this sunny and friendly country. Yerevan, Gerard, Khor Virap, Norovank, Etchmiadzin, natural beauty - Lake Sevan, Mount Aragats, mountain passes and gorges. The excursions smoothly transitioned into the main component of the program — acquaintance with the cuisine of Armenia. These include master classes, tastings, delicious lunches and dinners. Everything is very delicious! Words cannot express — just try! Many thanks to our guide Gore and driver David. With what love and warmth for the history of his country, Gore conducted excursions for our small group (4 people). His knowledge and fascinating story about the culture and traditions of his Motherland, the adoption of Christianity, the creation of the alphabet, and the difficult trials that befell the Armenian people will be for us an impetus for further study of the history of Armenia. And how he talked about khachkars, the art of their creation, and the meaning of the patterns! During the tour, Gore suggested the best angles for photographs, learned recipes for cooking, discussed with us what life is like in Yerevan (and we arrived there during the Francophonie Summit and on the eve of the celebration of the 2800th anniversary of Yerevan), the results of football matches (the next League of Nations games) and everything it is with friendliness, warmth and humor. When we crossed paths with other groups, they openly envied us that we had such a guide. David, thank you for the comfort in the car, help with luggage, for safe driving both on mountain serpentines and in busy Yerevan. Well done! Your work deserves the highest praise. The tour exceeded all expectations, and on the last day Ararat opened for us! Thank you again for your hospitality and for an interesting and delicious tour. Peace and prosperity to Armenia! And see you again!

Trip to Armenia in September
Elena and Timur
Just returned from a gastronomic tour of Armenia. Filled with the brightest impressions! In addition to the luxurious feasts (otherwise it is difficult to name the lunches and dinners that were organized for us), we saw, heard and felt the soul of Armenia. The wonderful guide of our group, Garnik Mirzoyan, shared with us his love for this beautiful country and his pride in its difficult fate. The history of the country sounded unusually fascinating from the lips of this intelligent, charming young man. And I would like to express special gratitude to the driver of our group, Vage, for a safe and comfortable trip. We really hope that we will visit Armenia more than once, and Garnik and Vage will give us new wonderful impressions.

Vacation in September
Catherine
Good afternoon We spent enough time selecting a country and a tour to spend a week in a warm, sunny place with benefit and pleasure. We stopped on a gastronomic tour to Armenia, and didn’t regret it at all! From the very moment we left the arrival hall of Yerevan airport until the farewell to the same airport, we were surrounded by such care and a desire to help that we did not expect, and in general we rarely met anywhere. The tour is designed very competently - there are no long journeys and a not too tiring program (three or four key attractions per day), with thoughtful meals in the most comfortable conditions - dinner in the Yerevan tavern right next to the stage with a folk ensemble and dancers, lunches in cozy gardens and courtyards under trees (sometimes right with apples and pears) overlooking mountains and valleys, a closed terrace overlooking Lake Sevan (it was cool and rainy, but the lake was in full view), Amelie’s home living room with the best table service! Those. Meal from a need to gain strength turned into a holiday and an unforgettable event with pleasant conversations and impressions. I won’t talk much about the food - I really liked everything we tried. Food in Armenia is something, you have to try it!!! Every day we tasted something new, so we got a broad understanding of the national cuisine. The wine is tasty and easy to drink, I also really liked the fruit vodka (60%) and was a great drink, especially on cool days. Now about the most important thing - I want to say special words of gratitude to our guide Garnik and driver Vaha for that week of real rest, when we could relax and just have fun, starting from the always clean and very comfortable car, a carefully prepared bottle of water in the seat feeder, neatly laid suitcase in the trunk and ending with extraordinary stories about the history of Armenia, about its life past and present, about its nature and weather. All this in Garnik’s positive, cheerful manner with jokes, jokes and funny stories. It is felt that these people love their country very much and are proud of it, and we fell in love with it too. Armenia is different: sometimes sunny, sometimes rainy; sometimes yellow, sometimes green, sometimes blue and gray (that’s how Sevan greeted us); sometimes very close to the sky and clouds (in the mountains), sometimes hiding in gorges and spreading out in valleys - I was impressed, although I already travel quite a lot and have seen a lot of things. The monasteries and fortresses are original, located so picturesquely that they take your breath away. Garnik is a very interesting, erudite storyteller. I liked that on many issues he offers several points of view, while clearly justifying the one he considers the most probable. And, of course, everything Armenian is the best and most beloved (by the end of the tour, I already thought so myself :-)). Performed by Garnik, we listened to beautiful poems by Armenian and Russian poets about Armenia (especially creepy on mountain roads), and in the car we listened to national music, which was simply mesmerizing. I want to thank Vahe separately - I don’t really like long car trips, but here everything was beyond praise - he quickly and comfortably delivered us to our next destination, very carefully dropping us off in the most convenient places and meeting us in full readiness to hit the road, charmingly smiling. If Garnik is an excellent student and a winner of Olympiads in biology, language and history (??? - maybe geography - I’ve already forgotten)))) and plays excellent table tennis (which we personally saw when we left for a circuit tour from Yerevan), then Vahe turned out to be a real champion in freestyle wrestling (a whole family dynasty). I want to wish happiness, health, LOVE and all kinds of prosperity to our Garnik and Vaha, as well as prosperity to Barev Armenia and their partner-friends, who also helped make this tour magical and unforgettable. I want to wish Armenia a bright and peaceful future, may your country only become more beautiful and stronger, and may ordinary people (they are already kind, cheerful and friendly) become a little richer))) Thank you very much! P.S. As you already wrote in one of your reviews, I ask you to give Garnik and Vaga a bonus for such a well-run tour! )))

A unique acquaintance with Armenia
Vladimir
Hello, travel lovers! We would like to share our impressions with you. My wife and I took an individual tour from June 16 to June 23, 2018. A good impression starts with a great view from the airplane window. Upon arrival early in the morning: customs, luggage, transfer, currency exchange, check-in - all without problems. And then 7 days of a very rich and interesting program. Thanks to manager Enise. It is useless to talk about unique historical places and amazing nature. You have to see it with your eyes, walk it with your feet and drive 1500 km. There were a lot of impressions. The wine and gastronomic part of the tour is still in my memory and in my home bar, but after the tour I had to go on a diet. Thank you very much to your staff for everything. Roland Tmoyan and Aro Vardanyan are professionals in their field and simply sincere people. I must say that during our entire stay in Armenia, we felt at home. There are friendly people and warm hospitality everywhere. We wish the wonderful travel agency "Barev Armenia" further creative success and expansion in the tourism services market. Friends, I am not campaigning, I advise you to visit Armenia at least once in your life. P.S. We plan to return to Armenia in 2019. Always drawn to good things.

Hello, dear friends! Barev dzes! A short report on the gastronomic tour to Armenia September 19 - 25, 2017. We were lucky: the stars aligned! Армения со вкусом
Raspopova Svetlana
The tour went simply wonderful, as in the Russian proverb - “without a hitch.” Your guys, Gor and Araik, worked for the big five with a huge plus. No hitches or misunderstandings. I have the most pleasant impressions of them both as people and as professionals in their field. And of course, Armenia itself is unique, full of historical heritage, friendly people, delicious food. I would like to come back again, which we probably will. Good luck to your company and further development.

Чудесное открытие Армении
Svetlana
“I bow my head before your antiquity. And I kiss your beauty on your scarlet lips... Country-flint, country-diamond, country-dream! These poetic lines of Gorodetsky do not leave my head after visiting your beautiful country. Having recently returned from Armenia, we already miss the country that enveloped us in warmth. And all this became possible thanks to the high professionalism of your company’s employees. Gore and Arayik opened Armenia to us, showing us its pearls, opening the pages of its centuries-old history. Thanks to them for their warm hospitality. And I would especially like to note Gore’s professionalism and his inexhaustible positive energy. Svetlana and Marina. Nizhnevartovsk

We are writing some time after the end of our trip to Armenia to sincerely thank your company for an exceptionally well-organized tour! Special thanks to our guide Gor Karapetyan, who managed to make all the excursions so informative and interesting that I wanted to learn more and more about Armenia! Without a doubt, Gore is one of the best guides we have encountered in many years. Largely thanks to him, I formed the best impressions of Armenia. Many thanks to the driver Arkady for his very professional driving and to the tour managers for their clear and prompt responses at the stage of choosing a tour and preparing for it. We have already repeatedly recommended "Barev Armenia" excursionists on other trips and our friends and we will be sincerely glad to do this again and again! Thanks again for a brilliant job!
